 Celebrate Ketupat: Javanese Local Tradition

Celebrate Ketupat after seven days of Eid Al-Fitr, which is one of the local Javanese traditions. Actually, what is Ketupat? So, seven days after Eid Al Fitr, Javanese people make Ketupat and Lepet by using leaf namely Janur.

Ketupat is similar to rice cake. It is made from rice covered by leaves but the shapes are different. If rice cake is long, but Ketupat is square. How about Lepet? Lepet is covered by leaf and Javanese people fill the leaf with sticky rice mix grated coconut.

They are boiled for around 2 hours in the water until it's done. Lepet can be eaten directly but Ketupat eat together with soup in Java namely Lodeh and Kare. That was so delicious. Nobody can reject it. The picture at the bottom is Ketupat and Kare soup.

The soup consists of full seasoning water and some components like vegetables, tofu, meat or chicken, and shrimp crisp. Look at the display of Ketupat. How to make the cover of Ketupat is available on YouTube. There are so many tutorial videos about how to make Ketupat and Lepet by using Leaf.

How Javanese People Celebrate Ketupat

1. share it with neighbours and family

All people in Java make Ketupat and Lepet. Sometimes they will start in the morning and then finish the production of Ketupat and Lepet in the evening. The night is the time to share Ketupat and Lepet with neighbours and Family.

After the boiling process of Ketupat and Lepet finish. They put some in the plastic bag. For example, every plastic bag consists of three Lepet, two Ketupat, and a bowl of Lodeh. Then they will go to the home of some people like neighbours, cousins, grandfather, etc to give that plastic bag.

2. Bringing in the Mosque

The second way to celebrate Ketupat is also different from the first number. Javanese people can celebrate Ketupat by eating together their Ketupat and Lepet in the mosque. So, they bring what they make in the home to the mosque.

In the mosque, there will be activity before they eat Ketupat or Lepet together, there is a religious speech from a prominent figure in that area. After hearing the speech they pray and last they eat together the Ketupat and Lepet.

In the other mosque, they just collect the Ketupat and Lepet and then share them with their neighbour. So, they can go home and bring Ketupat and Lepet from other people. That was so interesting tradition, right? When there is someone cannot bring Ketupat or Lepet, they can bring other food like fruit or snacks to share.

3. Sitting in The Village Meeting Hall

The last way to celebrate Ketupat is the same as the previous but the differences are just the place. The second way is in the mosque, the last is in the Village Meeting Hall or the field.

Some Javanese people will celebrate Ketupat in a field by sitting together. Before they come, they collect their Ketupat and Lepet and then make it like a mountain. So that was so high. There will be prayer and speech and in the last activity, they will share the mountain of Ketupat and Lepet.

2. Semua pada sibuk kerja, gak bakal punya tetangga buat ngerumpi

Kebiasaan dikampung ibu-ibu sering ngumpul buat ngobrol.

4. Banyak cewek pakek baju seksi kalau lagi jalan

Javanese Culture Which Is Still Available In Lamongan

Javanese culture has characteristics that are different from those of other cultures. As we know Java Island is one of the islands with a population, they live in Java and are also separated in some places. Javanese people, especially older is always keep their culture alive.

Javanese culture is alive in some areas of Indonesia. Lamongan is one of the areas in Java which has its own Javanese culture. Many of them preserve the Javanese culture, and they act depending on the culture at a certain time. What are the cultures?

Lamongan and its Javanese culture

  • Engagement process in Lamongan

This is one of the famous cultures in Lamongan. It is about the engagement process. Firstly, both of boy and girl's parents should come home. That is the so-called nyaweni, it is a general habit in Java for the engagement process. What is special in Lamongan? the girl's parents have to come first to the boy homes for the engagement process. This is different from other area which has the habit of boy parents coming first.

Javanese culture always makes the date of the wedding based on the date of birth of the bride. It happens also in Lamongan. Sometimes the engagement process is the time for discussing the date of marriage based on the date of birth of the bridge. Then they compare the date of born with the Javanese date. The picture above is the gift from the girl that was brought to the boy's home in the engagement process.

Just some people understand how to count. They are old Javanese and understand how to count. The younger Javanese cannot do that, that's why people will invite old Javanese to the engagement process because they understand about Javanese date.

  • Boran Rice

Javanese culture influences the part of what they eat. That means the food. In Lamongan, there is a special local food namely boran rice. It cooked by using traditional ways and packaged in traditional ways.

The picture above is just the side dish for Boran rice. Boran rice is rice with many kinds of dishes like fish, chicken, egg, and special flavours. The flavour is red because it is made from onion, garlic, chilli, red pepper, candlenuts, and coconut. The complete flavour is secret based on the seller's story.

What makes it special besides the taste? the seller put the rice in a big place namely boran (which seems like plaited mats) and brought it to sell. They sell boran rice in the market, tourist places, four junctions and sidewalks.

People can find the seller of boran rice in 24 hours, so that's easy to find them in Lamongan, especially Lamongan City. They spread all over the place. So don't worry if you're hungry at the midnight.

Lamongan people usually eat boran rice on the sidewalk, they use a plate from the seller or just put the boran rice in plastic paper. The price minimally is around 10.000 rupiahs. It depends on what side dish you choose.
